Love Hurts

“I believe there's a hand that guides us.
It just isn't always a gentle one.
Or one that seems fair at the time.
But I dunno, I try to trust in it now.
When I freak, I just try to... shit, I guess trust in it.
Because at the end of the day, what else can you do? Choice only gets you so far. Reasoning and planning too. The rest... it's up to someone else.
Where we end up, who we know, what happens to the people we love... we don't have a lot of control over any of it."

Goodreads Description

Ruthless and brilliant, Vishous, son of the Bloodletter, possesses a destructive curse and a frightening ability to see the future. As a pretrans growing up in his father's war camp he was tormented and abused. As a member of the Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels him to reveal his inner pain and taste true pleasure for the first time-until a destiny he didn't choose takes him into a future that cannot include her...

My Thoughts

My Black Dagger Brotherhood marathon continues. Seriously, I just can't give these men up. I won't lie. I was hesitant going into this book a little bit. Vishous never really stood out to me in the previous books. I was curious as to how I would react to his guys, I don't know why I even bother to worry about these books because V wormed his way right into my heart and broke it over and over again.

V's story is one of pain, suffering, and lots of self-hatred. I never expected the story we get from him and he constantly had me clutching my chest with sympathy pain for him. And then we get Jane, a human heart surgeon who not only repairs his heart physically but emotionally as well. Ha, yeah, cheesy reference but I totally went there. Sorry not sorry. Their story does not choose the path of least resistance and I was gripped with anticipation to see how things would turn out. I really loved Jane's characterization and found her inner monologues and thinking amazing. She knew what was happening was crazy and she should be running for the hills, but it just felt right to her. I loved this. The sexy scenes were...phew, pretty hot y'all. That V really knows what he likes and I def got a 50 Shades feel...even though this book was written first...still. V is hot. His dominant nature and vocabulary will have you sweating a little bit for sure.

While I loved the story overall, I did have an issue with the ending. My one gripe is how the story came together at the end. I will obvi not give away spoilers but the ended just seemed like a cop-out for reasons you'll understand WHEN you read it. :)

While this book's main focus is Vishous we do get scenes from a lot of other points of views. Phury and John's in particular I was always looking forward to. I am SO excited to read Phury's book because I soooo want him to have a happy more than one way if you know what I mean. It's a long...loooong time coming. And I want more into that gorgeous head of hair of his. And John!? Oh he breaks my heart in the best way! I want to hug him to death and then want him to at the same time whip out a Glock and cap somebody to protect me. He is perfect proportions of vulnerable with the imminent threat of deadly. I need more of him. Along with John comes Blay and Qhuinn and I just LOVE seeing their bromance! Their training and the trials they go through trying to establish themselves after the change I just LOVE! I can't get enough of these 3. Just ador.

I loved that this book was more well-rounded with the entire Brotherhood and story. I loved getting more of an in-depth look at the Chosen and Scribe Virgin and some of their ancient rules and rituals. I'm told by Kristi that starting with this book we definitely get more of the overall picture rather than a single couple's story.

I still can't seem to put these books down! They are just amazing and I am in constant need to find out where the story goes next.

Should You Read This? Uh, duh. But read the previous 4 first ;)

  1. V's relationship with Butch throws me. I've come to terms with this book but without ruining it for anyone else I wanted more you know?? Great job! ~Kristina

  2. I like Kristina's comment. Those two are very ahem close...they make me laugh. Sometimes I think they need their own book or something. hehe
