Are You Afraid of the Dark

"Nobody looks good in their darkest hour.
But it's those hours that make us what we are.
We stand strong, or we cower.
We emerge victorious, tempered by our trials, or fractured by a permanent damning fault line."

Goodreads Description

The New York Times bestselling author of Darkfever and Bloodfever returns to Dublin’s Fae-infested shores in a bold, sensual new novel. Hurtling us into a realm of seduction and shadows, Karen Marie Moning tells the enthralling tale of a woman who explores the limits of her mysterious powers as she enters a world of ancient sorcery—and confronts an enemy more insidious than she could ever have imagined.

He calls me his Queen of the Night. I’d die for him. I’d kill for him, too. When MacKayla Lane receives a torn page from her dead sister’s journal, she is stunned by Alina’s desperate words. And now MacKayla knows that her sister’s killer is close. But evil is closer. And suddenly the sidhe-seer is on the hunt: For answers. For revenge. And for an ancient book of dark magic so evil, it corrupts anyone who touches it.

Mac’s quest for the Sinsar Dubh takes her into the mean, shape-shifting streets of Dublin, with a suspicious cop on her tail. Forced into a dangerous triangle of alliance with V’lane, an insatiable Fae prince of lethally erotic tastes, and Jericho Barrons, a man of primal desires and untold secrets, Mac is soon locked in a battle for her body, mind, and soul.

As All Hallows’ Eve approaches and the city descends into chaos, as a shocking truth about the Dark Book is uncovered, not even Mac can prevent a deadly race of immortals from shattering the walls between worlds—with devastating consequences.…

The Progression

I have been loving the last two books of this series but Faefever kicks up the intensity ten-fold. What I loved about this book is that we learn SO MUCH about the infamous book and the history of Faery. We see where the intentions of the Lord Master lay and we continue to be sexually frustrated whenever Mac and Barrons and in the same 500 feet vicinity. More on that later. Obviously, this is the third book so I cannot reveal too much about the plot itself except we get a lot more details about everything.

Mac has evolved into Badass Mac which I am beyond loving. She is resourceful, quick on her feet, smart, and damn if this girl isn't trying to play both sides and be the fence at the same time. I LOVED this. She doesn't want to rely solely on Barrons (why the hell not?) to figure out what she is and find the elusive book. She makes further alliances with V'lane, Dani reaches out to her, and she really has a fantastic head on her about getting what she wants. The plot thickens whenever Barrons comes into the picture. He continues to be secretive (and sexy) and absolutely infuriating. He doesn't ever really tell Mac anything which is annoying BUT you know it's one of those things thats probably for her own good.

The Romance

You guyyyyyyyys. This romance is such a slow burn I feel like my whole body is going to combust soon. They take two steps forward and three steps back. It's killing me...slowly...see what I did there? Anyways. I love this because I can only imagine the payoff of all this built-up sexual tension. It's going to be an explosion of epic proportions. I can't wait. It has to happen. This guy wouldn't be loved by so many trusted friends if he DOESN'T finally make a move, right? There is a part where Mac buys a cake for Barrons birthday and he smashes it and yells at her not to humanize him and how he is not like her and I almost cried. Like it hurt my heart...actual pain in my chest. Like why Barrons? WHY?! Can you just makeout already?! For fucks sake. Ugh. Anyways. I love Barrons and I just want them together to make an even more kickass team. Soon? Is it soon?

The Ending

OMFG DID THAT JUST HAPPEN?! WHAT JUST HAPPENED?! WHY WHY WHY WHY?! Holy shit, I seriously cannot even compute the events of the end. My heart...oh, my freaking heart.

Backstage Pass
If you love the other books...obvoiusly.
If you are looking for an adult paranormal series to get into that has a lot of character growth, slow, slow, slow burn romance, and a fight for our world...this is for you.
