My Thoughts

The Belle
I am a huge fan of this series and have bene eagerly anticipating the next novel since it's predecessor came out. This book did not disappoint. I'll try and stay vague as it is the third book in the series and if you haven't read this yet--why haven't you read this yet?!--I don't want to spoil anything so I'll do my best.

On pacing par with The Mime Order, The Song Rising is full of action which I loved. I felt like the plot moved consistently and regularly to keep the reader on their toes. The rebellion is happening but it's not an easy road that Paige has started down. Starting a rebellion is not easy and the flaws and mistakes in decision making made me love the book even more. I loved that Shannon showed the delicate intricacies of human dynamic when trying to take charge of a disgruntled population.  A leader will never make every person happy and the theme of sacrificing for the greater good and making difficult decisions was present throughout the story.

As I said above, rebellion isn't easy. Mistakes happen. Stupid decisions--in hindsight--are made. People get hurt. And weirdly enough, I loved this. It wasn't fun per say to read by any means but it felt real. Shit happens and people make mistakes and sometimes the odds are stacked against you in an insurmountable way. The growing pains Paige went through made the story feel organic, realistic, and painfully truthful.

Paige continues to surprise me in the best ways. She's not perfect like I said but that makes me like her more. I loved getting to know her commanders because I felt like their character development was fantastic and really gave a face to this revolution as well as give it its heart. Speaking of heart, the romantic dynamic between Paige and a certain Rephaite was great. I felt The Mime Order fell a bit short with this but this book more than made up for it.

A fast-paced story, an engaging plot, an inspiring heroine, and a bit of romance to keep your heart pumping, The Song Rising is a fantastic addition to The Bone Season family and I cannot WAIT to see what happens next!

Backstage Pass
If you love flawed heroines, revolution, and a bit of clairvoyance...this book is for you.
